LESSON INFO
About Lessons
For over 15 years I have taught students of all ages and from beginner to advanced playing levels. I am comfortable and familiar working with any genre of music. My students are generally about 1/3 adults and 2/3 children & teens. Most students are either beginners learning the fundamentals, or lifelong players looking to improve their improvisation, songwriting, or music theory skills.
There are some limits to my knowledge and experience, mostly relating to advanced jazz theory. If you are an advanced player and curious if I can help you, please reach out and I will be happy to discuss your needs.
A few of the things we can work on in your lessons include:
- Playing Mechanics
- Strumming
- Music Theory
- Ear Training
- Songwriting
- Improvisation
- Tab or Standard Notation
- Transcription

My home studio is both a fun and professional environment for kids and adults alike to learn. When you arrive, you'll enter into the waiting room where you can access the wifi and use the restroom while you wait. Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons, wait in the waiting room, or drop their kiddos off, so long as they are sure to return before the end of the lesson.

I'm very proud of the feedback I've received from my students over the years. My students have become friends and even neighbors. See what everyone is saying about their experience learning with me below:

My daughter loves this teacher Tim. He is great at keeping her interested in practicing her electric guitar. He motivates her by giving her the compliments she deserves. This makes her want to practice more. He works with her and she chooses what she wants to learn.

Tim has been so patient while teaching guitar to my 6 year old son, and it feels like my son has progressed fairly quickly since starting his lessons in January. His studio is nice and his prices are definitely reasonable. My son is enjoying his lessons and has become so proud of himself :)

Tim is patient, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. My 10 year old looks forward to his weekly guitar lesson and he has developed not only skills, but a love of music and learning. Tim is unbelievably patient and encouraging. His studio includes a waiting room with WiFi. And during COVID, he has worn a mask and made Skype lessons available. We look forward to many more lessons!

I've been taking lessons for several weeks now and really love the way Tim teaches. We pick music to learn in the genre of my choosing that focuses on the basics, yet is challenging. Highly recommend.

Teacher Tim is the best. Always coming up with great ways to keep my daughter engaged in her learning/advancement with the guitar. She is always playing current pop hits and loves to brag to her friends that she can play this or that song while they are playing on the radio.

My son Jaxson (8 yrs. old) has been taking guitar lessons for a little over a year with Tim. He is an excellent instructor and has patience when working with young kids. Everything about La Mesa String School is professional and top notch. He offers easy to access lesson plans, on line song libraries, his own guitar method book as well as online payments and schedules. Tim is always available to answer questions and offers concerts/recitals for his students and families twice a year. Jaxson has learned so much in his first year of guitar from Tim. La Mesa String School really is As good as it gets!

My 7 year old daughter really enjoys her lessons here. What I really like is that the music is fun for her. She's pretty young to stay interested and it's impressive that she wants to keep going back. I would recommend lessons here for any young musician.

If you are even thinking about learning to play the guitar, then Tim is the guy to go to. When I began lessons with Tim, I didn't even know how to hold the guitar correctly, let alone play it. But after a few months, I can tell I improve with each lesson. He takes the time to get to know what music you enjoy playing and he is always on the look out for any tips or advice he can give that will help you improve your performance. The price is right, the setting is really comfortable, and the teacher is great. Highly recommend Tim for your guitar lessons!

My 13-year old daughter has been learning how to play the acoustic guitar through lessons from Tim Dobranski for the past 4 months. Being older than the average age that most kids are when they start learning how to play an instrument, I thought that my daughter would have a hard time picking up the basics, but she went from zero experience to now switching from one chord to another, strumming patterns, and using the chords to play actual songs! It is amazing how much she has learned in just a few months. The first lesson alone - my daughter learned the beginning of a Beatles song! How awesome was that?! The location is in a quaint neighborhood between La Mesa and El Cajon. The price of Tim's lessons are VERY affordable (trust me, I have 3 kids with daycare payments and loans to prove it!!). We meet with Tim once a week for a half hour. He has set days and times but is very flexible, should you need to switch your day/time slot . Tim is a great teacher with tremendous patience. He is approachable and personable, which I am so grateful for, as my daughter is super shy! If you or your kids want to learn how to play the guitar, I would definitely recommend contacting the La Mesa String School.

I've been taking lessons with Tim for about 3 months now, and I can honestly say I would recommend him to anyone looking for guitar lessons. I'm in my early twenties, and work multiple jobs but Tim is always flexible if I have to cancel or move times, as my schedule can get pretty crazy. He's extremely affordable (important for a recent college grad like me!) and his lessons are completely customized, and of such high-caliber. I have had a couple of guitar teachers throughout the past 15 years, and I know I found one I can actually stick with! He has the perfect amount of professionalism and approachability, allowing you to feel completely comfortable learning to play guitar with him.
Meet Tim
My name is Tim and I teach guitar under the name of The La Mesa String School. I'm a La Mesa native. I picked up the guitar early in grade school and I've been playing ever since. In the 20 some years since then, I've learned from many of San Diego's best guitar instructors. I spent several years after high school in a band gaining experience as both a musician and a businessman. We were signed to a record label, released one album and then promptly broke up!
Teaching
I began working for the La Mesa/Spring Valley School District in 2006 in the after school program with children grades K-8th. For several years I taught my very own RockStar Guitar Troupe, traveling to various schools throughout the district to teach guitar and culminating in a student concert. In 2009 I began offering private guitar lessons while attending San Diego State University. As I continued to teach, I began to develop a deep interest in music pedagogy and in finding ways to help my students learn quickly and more effectively. In the years since then, I've prided myself on offering innovative and effective ideas to improve my lessons and help students learn quickly and more effectively.
Software Development
Around 2021, I returned to school to study software development. In 2024, I left the LMSV school district to pursue web development full-time. Today, I work as a web developer for a media company in San Francisco and still teach guitar lessons in the evenings. Outside of work, I’m continuing to build my own guitar learning and practice platform, which I hope to eventually launch within my String School app.
The Future
As I continue building my guitar lesson program, I think it’s important to stay active in music outside of teaching too. In 2025, my old band had an unexpected resurgence because of a wave of interest on streaming and social media. That led to us writing our first new music in 20 years, after releasing an album back in 2005. It’s been really exciting to be part of that, and it helps keep me connected to music not just as a teacher, but as someone who still makes it too.
